We are looking for an enthusiastic Discipline Lead Postgraduate Production to join our Teaching & Learning team. About the Role: Under the direction of the relevant Program Convenors, the Discipline Lead Postgraduate Production works collaboratively within a program team to co-determine, develop, and deliver AFTRS Postgraduate Screen programs. This position is responsible for the oversight of postgraduate student productions and management of the teaching team delivering within Production subject areas. The role marries senior production experience with experience in the education sector, supporting excellence in learning, development of high-level technical and collaborative skills, and high-quality student experience across production-based learning environments. A key focus of the Discipline Lead Postgraduate Production role is mentoring students through development, preproduction, production and postproduction of short documentary and fiction films. The DL role will work closely with stakeholders across the AFTRS production pipeline to ensure teams meet key production milestones—including delivery of relevant production materials (e.g. Risk Assessments, shooting schedules)—within financial, resourcing and other parameters. The Discipline Lead Production role will also have oversight over student-led production activities carried out as part of Course-Related Practice. This role will involve teaching, assessment, and fulfilling all associated academic management, quality assurance, and administration. The Discipline Lead Postgraduate Production role is instrumental in the school’s fulfilment of its remit to industry, and will oversee the industry currency of production, including liaising with industry stakeholders such as industry guests and other key industry organisations. This role will engage in specific approved projects, including research activities, in accordance with AFTRS’s Research Strategy. Production lecturers teaching into AFTRS postgraduate programs report to this position. Key Accountabilities: Discipline Leadership: - Contribute to the co-creation and development of a program curriculum that enables students to achieve high-level outcomes through best-practice creative pedagogies, and flexible and inclusive delivery - In coordination with AFTRS Production, Production Operation, and other cross-divisional teams, engage with industry to ensure we are facilitating best practice learning within a rapidly changing environment. - Contribute to ensuring compliance with appropriate internal and external academic governance standards and policies. - Engage in student recruitment and admissions activities. - Actively participate in Discipline Reviews to provide discipline specific advice across the school to ensure that all AFTRS programs are reflective of industry best practice. - Contribute or lead on research or other approved AFTRS strategic projects in consultation with the Program Convenor. - Problem-solve delivery, operational, resourcing, and strategic issues as part of a collegial team under the direction of the Program Convenor. - Lead by example, live the values of AFTRS and demonstrate self-reflective behaviours and high-level cultural competency, facilitating the embedding of these values in the curriculum and the culture of the delivery. Production Oversight: - Mentor students through development, preproduction, production and postproduction of short documentary and fiction films. - Work closely with students and stakeholders across the AFTRS production pipeline--including Discipline Leads, and Production and Production Operation staff--to ensure teams meet key production milestones, including delivery of relevant production materials (e.g. Risk Assessments, budgets) within agreed parameters. - Support student-led production activities conducted as part of course-related practice (including review of Risk Assessments, Call Sheets and other production materials). - Actively participate in development, preproduction, production and postproduction meetings, and work collaboratively with AFTRS staff and students to identify creative solutions within agreed constraints. - Model, and support students in observing, industry protocols and best practices. - Support resolution of creative differences and interpersonal issues in student production teams. - Communicate relevant production information and respond to production enquires with students, staff and other stakeholders in a timely manner. - In coordination with Production staff, ensure students have timely access to production information and production-related documents (e.g. Production Parameters). - Support accessibility for, and physical and psychosocial safety of, students, staff and external cast and crew on productions and production-related activities. - Escalate production related matters to the Convenor, the Capstone Committee, and other relevant staff. Teaching: - Teach in Production subjects to support learning outcomes in accordance with the approved curriculum, timetable, and resources. - Fulfil the number of teaching, tutorial / mentoring and assessment days agreed annually with the school and in accordance with the agreed workload. - Provide mentoring and academic support to students within Production subjects. - Maintain effective communication with students throughout the semester. Subject Leadership & Academic Quality: - Design and develop subject outlines, lesson plans, teaching materials and learning assets in accordance with the program framework to agreed timelines, ensuring that teaching activities are constructively aligned to the learning outcomes, assignment, and assessment criteria. Ensure all teaching materials (outlines, lesson plans, teaching assets) are prepared, available for review and approval, distributed (online and other) and archived as required. - Ensure that lecturers, guests and external production crew are appropriately prepared – sharing necessary teaching and production materials, engaged in appropriate training, and have been communicated appropriate information regarding Student Learning Access Plans (according to permissions given by students requiring reasonable adjustments). - Coordinate the delivery of the program for their subjects. Ensure teaching and production requirements (lecturers / equipment / rooms) are communicated to the Program Coordinators in good time and within agreed parameters. Work closely with the Program Coordinators to deliver the subject within agreed budget and resource parameters. - Ensure clear outcomes for academic progression. Assess student assignments and monitor student progress in accordance with the Assessment Marking Guidelines. Identify students - At Risk of failing and refer them relevant support in a timely manner as per Assessment Marking Guidelines. Refer student requests for special consideration, issues relating to academic progression, reports of academic misconduct and other student related matters to the Program Convenor (as appropriate). Attend all Assessment Panels, Grade Panel Reviews and prepare Subject Reports. Support and contribute as required to investigations of student academic or behavioural misconduct. - Communicate relevant information in a timely manner to students and respond to enquiries, ensuring clarity around assessments, including contacting students as a result of late assessments, non-submission, deduction of marks and / or extensions. - Monitor student feedback for subjects and manage student issues and complaints and, in consultation with the Program Convenor and program team, proactively take steps to address and / or continuously improve the program. Teaching Team Management: - Lead, coach and manage the Postgraduate Production teaching team supporting the delivery of your allocated subjects, providing actionable feedback, and managing any issues that are identified through student feedback or complaints. - Actively participate in Lecturer recruitment, induction, and ongoing development to enrich and create a diverse and multi-skilled teaching team. - Develop the teaching team’s capability through reviews of teaching practice and professional development plans. Other Duties: - Create and maintain culturally and psychologically safe learning and working environments. - There may be a requirement to undertake tasks outside the scope of the responsibilities listed to support the organisation. AFTRS will engage in a conversation should these tasks arise. About you – You Have: - Qualifications: Ability to meet the requirements of the Academic Employees Qualifications Policy. - Please seek advice from the HR Officer if unsure of eligibility under this policy. - Industry Experience: Substantial recent experience in the Australian Screen and Broadcast sector, with demonstrated understanding of production and post-production workflows and processes, and the ability to draw on current industry networks to enrich the program, support student productions, and provide opportunities for students. - Collaborative Practice: Proven and demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and respectfully, create inclusive working and learning environments in the co-creation of curriculum or industrial productions, and deal expertly and sensitively with conflict and students under pressure. - Teaching Experience: Demonstrated capacity to teach, mentor or develop staff at Higher Education, Further Education or similarly high level in industry, and an understanding of the latest approaches in creative pedagogy and inclusive and flexible learning approaches. - Leadership Experience: Proven leadership in either the relevant industry or academic context with evidence of strategic management and high-level staff supervision. - Future Practice Understanding: Understanding of future industry trends within production and education, and ability to inform high-level strategy for AFTRS and curriculum. - Systems Knowledge: Demonstrated general management ability and capacity to use tools and software specific to your discipline and technologies used in course planning and delivery, including the oversight of teaching materials, learning management systems, resources, collaborative working tools and contemporary office software (spreadsheets, word, PowerPoint) to strong level. - Academic Commitment: Commitment to academic quality and progression standards and student support through monitoring and implementation of relevant policies and procedures - Safe Work Environments: Experience in fostering culturally and psychologically safe work environments.
